Bar to Bar Through Beantown
“Eastern Standard is a large establishment known for its craft cocktails and delicious menu.”
Address: 528 Commonwealth Avenue
Date of Visit: Thursday, January 12, 2012
Bartender Name: Unknown
We first came to Eastern Standard for our Hot Toddy Event with Google Places (check out the pictures here). Right around the corner from Fenway Park, right in Kenmore Square, Eastern Standard is a large establishment known for its craft cocktails and delicious menu. Eastern Standard has soaring ceilings and provides many intimate dining options, and the staff is friendly with the bartenders being particularly knowledgeable and welcoming. Boasting warm wood tones and the largest marble bar in Boston (according to Eastern Standard themselves), it is a great place to grab drinks, dinner, or just apps before a game. While connected to a hotel, Eastern Standard is clearly not a hotel bar, although you do have to go upstairs to use the hotel bathroom.
Valerie’s Drink of Choice: Haverna
Ingredients: A sour of Pineapple Averna and Pimm’s
Review: The menu at Eastern Standard was expansive, and to be honest, many of them contained ingredients that I was not familiar with (I’m still new at this). So, I took a chance on the Haverna and was pleasantly surprised. The concoction had a faint taste of pineapple from the Averna – for those less knowledgeable like me, Averna is “spirit distilled from a delicate balance of flowers, herbs, dried fruits, spices and licorice with a touch of caramel” (thanks Intoxicologist!) The caramel taste described, felt to me more like a brown sugar or molasses flavor, which was well balanced with the tang and spices of the Pimms. It was unlike anything I’ve had before, but I would definitely order it again!
Eric’s Drink of Choice: Heart of Gold
Ingredients: No. 3 Gin, Velay Extra Liqueur, Bitters
Review: The Heart of Gold was a delicious blend of spirits that was the perfect opposite to the Hot Toddies we had enjoyed earlier in the night. This unique rendition of the classic gin martini was delicious. The Velay Extra Liqueur (a more herbal liquor that gives the cocktail its golden hue), plays well off the gin, giving the cocktail a fresh taste that reminded me of a cocktail containing either basil or rosemary. Delicious and great for slow sipping, the drink was worth the $12 and something I’d order again!
Wine Prices: Seven whites, seven reds, and three sparkling wines are available by the glass for $8 to $16 each. Seven options also in half bottles. Their full bottled wine menu is available online here.
Beer Prices: Sadly, we didn’t get a look at their beer menu – there is a link for it online but it’s currently broken!
Other: Eastern Standard has an expansive cocktail menu with 38 mixed drinks most of which are $10 to $12 each, as well as three mocktails for $6 each. Their full menu is online here!
